12 Days of Anime #12: Yuno’s Throne

12 Days of Anime begins today. Be prepared for an absolute truckload of posts before Christmas given all 3 of The Cart Drivers’ writers are taking part.

Fandom fantasising over the desirability of certain characters baffles me. For example, in the land of the shoujo romance, you have the abusive haughty asshole who mentally and/or physically hurts the female lead being considered the hottest thing ever and threats of rape are just lol so funny he’s just awkward, he’s so dreamy. On the female character side, you have the queen of the yanderes, Gasai Yuno, except there’s a key little difference here. The stereotypical alpha male is just an asshole. Yuno is flat out psychotic.

In the early episodes of Future Diary, people were genuinely angry that Yuki wasn’t accepting Yuno’s advances. To me it seemed cut and dry. She was a psychotic killer, so that’s a rather significant mark against her being ideal girlfriend material. But to these people, Yuno was loyal and loving, having eyes only for them and being kick ass to boot. It lent itself to the lazy fantasiser, who wants a girlfriend to fall for them without any effort on their part.

But was the show itself presenting Yuno as ideal girlfriend material? They did go on two dates together, and all went pretty well. Yuno lost her bikini top in one. In the other, she put on lots of pretty dresses. OK there was the small issue of her dead parents in her house, but that’s part of the ideal girlfriend. She will destroy anything that comes to get you, but to alone you she is the Yamato Nadeshiko. This Japanese idealised version of the perfect girlfriend, just coming in a slightly different fashion.

This rather rubbed me the wrong way, because it went against what I felt the show was trying to do. Yuki running away from his issues and failing to accept reality kept shoving him in further shit. Handing yourself over to Yuno would be the perfect way to abscond all responsibility. I must admit I also didn’t have a whole lot of confidence that Future Diary would cover this issue properly because Future Diary is insane. Completely and utterly batshit insane, ignoring logic for the sake of the grand and the crazy. However, just because it adheres to Future Diary Logic doesn’t mean it can’t also tell a fine story within its insane general proceedings.

So what does happen when Yuki finally gives in and lets himself be taken in fully by Yuno? She drugs him, drags him to an abandoned hotel and ties him up in a chair so he can’t escape, makes him pee into a bottle, and generally does all the things you would expect a complete and utter loony to do within this fucking insane world of Future Diary logic. That final shot where Yuno is perched on a throne in her underwear with the skulls of her parents in each hand is such a perfect moment that defines why I loved that show. It was bonkers, but managed to tell its story using those bonkers tools.

I’d suggest you go back and proofread this post again because it’s about as bonkers as mirai nikki is

The yandere thing also strikes me as odd, not that I am against that type of character to begin with as such people undoubtedly exist. That said, Yuno is a bit special in that regard for just how far she is willing to go. It is as you say a way of handing over all responsibilities, but also all freedoms. Maybe it’s really a statement about the transition to adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it that makes reactionary decisions like Yuki’s plausible.

I’m inclined to agree with you, that it does come to maturity where you would think Yuki should embrace Yuno. I have serious doubts those who thought he should had their minds changed by the end though.

Being a forum member trying to put out the flames when people complain at how much of a wuss Yukiteru is isn’t a good idea, as I personally experienced myself. You know what someone said to me when I tried to explain what you said in this post to them? “I just want Yuki to make the decisions I want him too”. Way to be a killjoy anonymous forum member.

I think Yuno alone makes Future Diary. She was the only good character. All the villais were pretty boring IMO and while I don’t hate Yukitere he wasn’t THAT bad either. Still it was a really entertaining series.
I’m still watching Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, because I’m sucker for romantic comedy series. Yes the main character is an asshole and isn’t likeable at all. But you know what? That’s suprisingly refreshining. I want to see when/if he becomes likeable at somepoint. And his version of love is fucking girls. So at least he acts like a teenager?
I still don’t like the scene where Kyon was about to hit Haruhi, just because I have never punched a girl and hopefully never will. No woman abuse in my anime thanks.

Boo, I liked the villains in Future Diary. They were humanised and their actions rationalised, even though all the insanity. The fact it managed to do this with all their villains was phenomenal.

I actually liked that scene where Kyon snapped because it was presented as ‘HOLY SHIT HE NEARLY HIT A GIRL’!!! It showed how far Haruhi had pushed him in being a terrible person, while still providing enough seriousness to the scene that it didn’t feel like it was saying “yeah hit those bitches”

(a rare moment of Scamp saying something positive about Haruhi)

Oh well… This was bound to happen. Might as well make an anthology out of it and call it a day.

I think some of these African despots are unrealistically black. My suspension of disbelief is shattered!

What kind of monster are you? Killing your parents and petting their cleaned skulls is plenty moe!

Given what’s gone on in Zetsuen no Tempest, I think 2012 is the year of “Skull moe”.

I must rewatch this psychopathic anime. I mean, I liked Shiki and Higurashi. Why did I not keep up with Mirai Nikki?

Because Shiki and Higruashi are horror, while Future Diary is quite firmly in the thriller category? Future Diary is about as scary as a kitten with a pirate eyepatch

One of quite many insanely great moments in a insanely great anime classic.

I ultimately felt nothing but meh to this series after watching the anime. I mean I liked the manga and I liked Yuno, but now I think my tastes have changed since the manga ended and now I dislike her and don’t really care about the series.
